Andrew Bosworth, vice president of Reality Labs at Facebook, gave some other clues as to what’s in store for future Oculus hardware. In an audio Q&A with John Carmack on Twitter Spaces transcribed by UploadVR, Bosworth suggested that although last year’s Quest 2 will remain for some time, the company is working on headphones with higher capacities.
“People are also wondering about Quest 3, which doesn’t exist yet [for] everyone who listens to us, who are reporters – there is no Quest 3, there is only a Quest 2. ”said Bosworth. “But I suggested to an AMA earlier this year about Quest Pro, because we have a lot of things under development that we want to introduce new features into the headset, along with the types that people theorize that we’d like to introduce them, and that’s a small distance yet. It still won’t happen this year. ”
“For those who are curious, Quest 2 will be on the market for a while – for a long time,” Bosworth continued. “And it will be, you know, I think the best bet for the most affordable way to get into VR and have a great experience.”
The discussion is particularly relevant right now, as last week Facebook announced the first exclusive title for Quest 2 headphones – Resident Evil 4 VR will not run in the original Quest. While the Quest 2’s hardware is significantly more powerful than its predecessor, the announcement could have made the owners of any headset be wary of Facebook’s long-term support.
Carmack, now a technical consulting officer at Facebook, said he “supports the exclusive exclusives of Quest 2, but believes that” there is still a fairly substantial market in Quest 1 users. ” Bosworth agreed, saying, “I expect the incentives for developers to support Quest 1 absolutely. You know, unlock seven digits of additional users who could buy your software – which is a pretty good deal when you can get it.
“The formal answer is that we can finally allow developers who have truly state-of-the-art applications to target Quest 2 alone, but our very strong recommendation is to support both, and that’s what we expect to happen on the basis of historical norms “, Bosworth added, suggesting that Resident Evil 4 VR the situation may not be so common at the moment.
