Vehicles checked. Roads blocked. The National Mall closed. The nation’s capital was increasingly locked in place on Saturday ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s upcoming inauguration when the Pentagon authorized 25,000 troops to be deployed to Washington, DC.
A Virginia man was arrested at a checkpoint and charged with having an unregistered gun.
The unprecedented increase in security occurred as the transfer of power continued, with inauguration events kicking off virtually on Saturday. And the new Chief of Staff Mr. Biden, Ron Klain, released a memo detailing Mr. Biden in the first 10 days of his reign, including various executive actions.
President-elect Biden will take action – not only to undo the worst damage done to the Trump administration – but also to move our country forward, “Klain said in the memo.
Mr Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris also introduced members of their science team on Saturday, insisting that “science will always be at the forefront of my administration”.
More charges were announced against rioters in the Capitol on Saturday. A Texas real estate agent said she should be pardoned for following President Trump’s advice. Prosecutors said Jenna Ryan took a private jet to Washington, DC, livestreamed the attack, and then tweeted, “We just stormed the capital. It was one of the best days of my life.”
“I just want people to know that I’m a normal person, that I listen to my president tell me to go to the Capitol. That I showed my patriotism while there and I protested and I tried not to do anything violent. and I didn’t realize there was actual violence, ”Ryan told CBS Dallas / Fort Worth.
