Experts warn not to take sedatives before receiving the COVID-19 vaccine

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – We know that some people like to take an over-the-counter pain medication before receiving a vaccine, but experts recommend this.

It used to be a common practice for parents who took their children for immunizations – they offered their children Tylenol or Ibuprofen before vaccines, with the thought that it would prevent side effects such as mild fever, fatigue or arm pain.

But while the drug can fade side effects, it could also spoil the body’s immune response.

Experts suggest that if you receive the COVID-19 vaccine, do not take an analgesic medicine first, unless you take it daily.

If you have had significant side effects from the first dose, then talk to your doctor about taking something after the second dose.

Researchers are not entirely sure that this reduces the effectiveness of the vaccine, but they think it could.

There are also other things you can do after you get a shot that can help you with side effects, including applying a cold compress to your arm, making sure you move your arm, drink plenty of fluids, and get extra rest.
