Given some allergic conditions in some patients, experts recommend avoiding the administration of the new drug that arrived on the island to avoid the associated comorbidities..

Although the vaccine against the new coronavirus is received with great anticipation, there are many questions and questions from the population suffering from certain pathologies or conditions, because clinical theories predominate where those individuals who have certain levels of allergy, because its administration could generate some effects. secondary.

In an interview with the Journal of Medicine and Public Health (MSP), various specialists such as Dr. Gabriel Martínez, doctor of infectious diseases at the Ponce School of Medicine, researcher Kerina Thompson, dean of the Ponce School of Medicine and vice president of research, acknowledged for their contributions to fear learning, together with the prestigious Dr. Gregory Quirk, who continued to develop these investigations in the Fear Learning Laboratory of the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, and Ms. Linnette Sánchez, Legal Counsel for Health Rights, clarified how patients with allergic conditions may be affected.

“We know that what is injected is a genetic sequence, ie pairs of RNA from these acids that the body turns into a protein at the cellular level and against this organism the body reacts by forming antibodies. There are people who are very hypersensitive to proteins, such as eggs or another product, and the person develops an allergy. Those people who have these characteristics are recommended not to be vaccinated, ”said Dr. Martínez.

In turn, the famous researcher Kerina Thompson, emphasizes the statement of Dr. Gabriel and claims that there is a high percentage of people who should not be vaccinated if they suffer from allergies, especially in those foods with protein characteristics.

“There are patients who have allergies to eggs and allergies to other proteins, but not only for COVID, but for any vaccine and that generates an immune reaction and there are people who are extremely allergic, because any reaction to the immune system can cause damage. , however, these people are struggling with many drugs, not just the one that is to come. The expectation of immunization must be higher than 70%, taking into account the fact that, for various reasons, there are people who cannot receive the drug like those already mentioned “, explained the researcher and the dean Ponce Medical School.

In addition, the importance of joint validation was recognized, such as that performed in the analysis and approval of other vaccines.

The most common thing I’ve always heard is that it exists if it has a certain type of egg protein and there are people who are allergic to eggs, because the vaccine is not recommended and other alternatives are sought to prevent the disease with other types. of vaccines that do not have that ingredient, so the same validation process must be performed with this vaccine. “, explained Mrs. Sanchez.

In recent weeks, rates of positive SARS-CoV-2 infections in Puerto Rico have risen, alerting the scientific and health community, with an average of 57,096 confirmed cases, 2,362 probable cases, 44,667 suspected cases, and finally, 1,238 deaths caused by the lethal pathogen (data taken from the Puerto Rican government website).

Listen to the evaluation of the specialists here:

“We are entering a phase of increasing the slope, in recent days in the southern area the impact has not been seen so much, however, in other sectors, what we are experiencing are the consequences of the activities of the day. Thank you, of course we can not let it pass. election day, where a large number of infections began “, the doctor explained Martínez.

The culmination of the contagion

It is important to consider those activities that can promote the growth of infections, it is also necessary to control the dynamics of infectious diseases, because, although at some point there may be a shortage of cases, from time to time there may be a hike.

“Between October and November, cases of COVID in several hospitals in southern Puerto Rico tripled, both visits to emergency rooms and hospitalized patients, as well as the number of deaths that are in parallel. “The infectologist said.

Will there be results of the partial closure?

The results of a decision to mitigate a wave of infections depend on a certain time, whether it worked or not, another point to consider is public awareness and monitoring of different biosecurity protocols, because if there is no such case individual will continue to prevail.

“What is developing is to see the process of partial closure and after 14 to 21 days to see the results and make decisions based on the appearance of the numbers. Here the most important thing is social awareness, no matter how many government protocols are implemented and if the message does not reach consciously, there will be no good results “, underlined Dr. Martínez.

The immunization process

In order for there to be a widespread process of stopping infection rates, it is important that a large number of people be vaccinated to stop the growing scale, with specialists recommending that more than 70% of the population receive the antidote for effective immunity.

“If we reach 50 or 60%, it would be good, but not enough, because it is still below this indicator. (…) Usually, mass immunity has shown that, if it is not at 70 or 75%, no significant changes are observed in the infectious-contagious disease ”, concluded Dr. Martínez.
