Everything Apple announced, April 2021: new iMacs, iPads, AirTags

The iPad Pro now runs on the same M1 processor as recent Macs. This gives high-end tablets a considerable increase in speed: the CPU is 50% faster than last year’s iPad Pro, with 40% faster graphics, according to Apple. The other big change is specific to the larger 12.9-inch model, which now uses Mini-LED technology on the LCD display for the backlight. Apple calls this liquid Retina XDR while trying to match the quality of its expensive Pro Display XDR monitor (read: better contrast, colors and brightness).

The USB-C port on both iPad Pro models now supports Thunderbolt, so you can connect your iPad to multiple monitors or storage devices, and that connector port has much higher data transfer speeds. There’s also the option to add 5G connectivity to the iPad Pro so you can get high-speed internet in the park, on Uber, and on the ferry. In particular, Apple has taken a page from the Facebook Portal: the new iPad Pro selfie camera has such a wide field of view that it can zoom in and out during video calls, making sure you never leave the frame.

The 11-inch model starts at $ 799, and the 12.9-inch model starts at $ 1,099. Orders start on April 30, and the tablets will be delivered in May.

Apple TV 4K

The new remote control allows some new gestures.

Apple

Apple TV 4K receives some pretty convincing updates, based mostly on the added speed of the newest A12 Bionic chip that is now inside. The new silicon enables high-frame HDR – perfect for sports fans and those shooting 5K at 60 frames per second on the iPhone 12 Pro.

The small box that connects to the TV looks the same as before, but now it comes with a 100% recycled aluminum remote control, which has been completely redesigned. A touch-sensitive, clickable pad is in the middle of the silver click button, with completely new start and mute buttons and a Siri button that reflects the iPhone to the side.

The most interesting feature of the new Apple TV 4K for moviegoers is a special color calibration tool that pairs the iPhone with the 4K TV, allowing it to use the camera to make sure your TV is perfectly calibrated to what appears on screen, thus bypassing many of the complicated menus of modern TVs. Time will tell how well this works, but it looks similar to the EZCal app (available for iPhone and Galaxy phones) that Samsung announced during CES in January.
