Evacuations ordered into blazing fire in Cherry Creek State Park

AURORA, Colorado – A wildfire burning in a swamp area in Cherry Creek State Park has forced evacuations in the area.

Evacuations are in effect for residents in the immediate area west of Parker Road and those in Cherry Creek State Park.

This is the second large brush firefighters to fight amid high gusts of wind in the metro area. A 100-acre grass fire burning near Bear Creek Lake Park and Fox Hollow Golf Course near Morrison led to evacuations Sunday afternoon. Most of the fire was out by late afternoon.

South Metro firefighters are at the site of the Cherry Creek eruption, working to get the fire under control before flame lengths get longer with sustained gusts of wind. Currently no structures are threatened.

Firefighters said the wind feeds the northwestern side of the fire, making suppression difficult and dangerous as embers get into trees and drop branches.
