Eusebio Sacristán, former Barcelona player and former Spanish coach, in an induced coma after surgery for head trauma

VALLADOLID – Former player and coach Eusebio Sacristán is in an induced coma after undergoing surgery on Thursday at the Valladolid Clinical Hospital to improve the intracranial pressure that caused a head clot due to a fall and injury to the head, according to medical sources.

Eusebio will remain in the hospital awaiting his evolution, as reported by the Foundation that bears his name in a statement and, at the express wish of the family of the former footballer and coach, will be mentioned the entity that will provide news about his health.

Because acute complications in this type of trauma result from increased cranial pressure, the operation was performed to reduce this pressure and will have to remain intubated and in an induced coma until its evolution is verified in the next few hours.

Eusebio Sacristán’s family wanted to convey “sincere gratitude” to all the people, the media and colleagues in the world of sports who are interested in his health.

Eusebio Sacristán Mena was coached in Real Valladolid’s career to make his first team debut at the age of 19 and, after four years, signed for Atletico Madrid, where he spent a season, to spend the next seven seasons in Barcelona with Johan Cruyff .

After signing for Celta Vigo in the 1995/96 season and playing there for two years, he returned to Real Valladolid, where he said goodbye as a player in 2002, with 543 games accumulated, which made him the third player to play the most official matches in the history of the League, only behind Zubizarreta and Raúl González.

As a coach, Eusebio coached Celta de Vigo, the Barcelona branch, Real Sociedad and Girona, from which he left in 2019, without having returned to occupy a bench since then, so he surrendered during this time to the Foundation that it bears his name and now resides in Valladolid.
