The Cuban Telecommunications Company (ETECSA) reported on Monday that its services will be affected by the end of the year due to the monetary unification recently announced by the Cuban government.

“ETECSA reports damage to the operation of the services, the commercial network and Transfermóvil in the days at the end and beginning of the year, due to the work of configuring the systems to adapt them to the new tariffs,” the Cuban communications monopoly posted on its official Facebook page.

In the same publication you can see several graphic images that describe the effects. On Wednesday, December 30, at 18:00, the Transfermóvil electronic payment platform will be deactivated.

On December 30 and 31, the company’s commercial offices will operate on a limited schedule, until 16:30 on the first day and until 12:30 on the second. On 1, 2 and 3 January, its commercial network will not be open to the public until the normal schedule is restored on 4 January.

Due to the configuration of the new rates, on January 1, mobile services (voice and text messages), recharges and internet at points of interest will be suspended for one hour (from 5:00 to 6:00). Wifi and Nauta Hogar. While Propia cards will be out of service from 5:00 to 21:00.

Navigation services through mobile data packets, fixed telephony and emergency calls on mobile phones (104 ambulances, 105 firefighters, 106 police officers) will remain unaffected.

In addition, from 1 January 2021, all payments that ETECSA will receive at its commercial offices will be in Cuban pesos (CUP).

The latest information, already announced by ETECSA on December 24, has been controversial for many Facebook users, as the company will continue to sell in dollars electronic equipment such as mobile phones or cordless phones in dollars

“Everything is clear. The only thing I don’t understand is that if the stores continue to receive cuckoos and give money to MN, why don’t you do it? And …. to those people who, out of absolute necessity, have to to buy a phone and a mobile phone, why don’t I sell it the same in cuckoo and / or in the national currency? What a bad service, God! ”, said the user Frank Gómez Cañibano.

To which the company replied that it was not “included in the entities authorized to collect CUC” that the Cuban state had ordered for another 6 months, after the monetary unification was carried out on January 1. ETECSA’s response only shifts responsibility to the island’s government and demonstrates its dependence and subordination to it.
