Epic buys Rad game tools

Epic Games announced today that it has acquired Rad Game Tools.

Clothing in Kirkland, Washington, offers a variety of programs for game developers, including the Bink video codec, Oodle data compression, and Telemetry performance visualization.

“Rad team members will work closely with Epic’s rendering, animation, information and audio teams, integrating key technologies and enhancements into Unreal Engine and beyond,” Epic said.

“The combined forces of Rad and Epic will give even more developers access to tools that make their games load and download faster and give their players a better video and gaming experience.”

Despite the acquisition, Rad will continue to work with companies beyond Epic, whether or not they use Unreal Engine.

Rad was founded in 1988 and also has a Japanese office set up in 2008. Its products have been used in almost 25,000 games.

The conditions of purchase were not disclosed.

The Rad agreement continues a crowded stretch for Epic on the procurement front. Since the beginning of 2019, Epic has acquired 3Lateral, Agog Labs, Psyonix, Twinmotion, Houseparty, Quixel, Cubic Motion, Hyprsense and SuperAwesome.

Earlier this week, it also bought a mall in North Carolina to serve as its future headquarters.
