The Red Sox are about to take on their next Brock Holt Enrique Hernandez, a super utility player who plays any position except the catcher.

A source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand that the Sox and Hernandez reached an agreement with a two-year, $ 14 million deal. The club did not announce the signing.

Hernández, who won a World Series with the Dodgers in 2020, will help fill the Red Sox ‘goal at second base.

The Red Sox, who appear to have lost Jackie Bradley Jr. to a free agency and have linked Andrew Benintendi in trade talks, can also use Hernández off the field.

While Hernández’s defensive versatility is a clear benefit – as the Red Sox learned directly from the Holt in 2014-19 – he can also strike, especially against left-handers. In 893 career appearances against left-handers, Hernández has a .820 OPS.

Hernandez won 21 career victories for the Dodgers in ’18 and returned with another 17 in ’19.

In 690 career games – all but 42 of them with the Dodgers – Hernandez has a .240 / .313 / .425 slash line with 71 homers and 227 RBIs.

Defensively, Hernández divided his career starting as follows: 11 at first base, 132 at second base, 56 at short break, 14 at third base, 60 on the left, 128 in the center and 35 on the right.

Although the Red Sox have not made any brilliant moves this winter, baseball chief officer Chaim Bloom has added depth to his group of position players along with Hunter Renfroe and Hernández, as well as right-handed pitching staff Matt Andriese and left-hander Martín Pérez.
