Emma Coronel, wife of drug lord Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán spends her days in prison in the United States and reads in a cell where she is locked in detention center in Alexandria, Virginia.

Attorney Mariel Colón, who is part of Coronel’s defense team, said she has asked for better conditions of confinement for her client, as prison officials don’t get Emma out of the cell until sunrise to go into a “small inner room.”

“Their incarceration conditions have not improved yet. She is locked up almost all day, ”said the lawyer.

Colonel, 31, was arrested in February at Dulles International Airport, outside Washington, when she was accused of participating in an illegal association to trade cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana.

The United States also accuses her of joining others to help Guzmán Loera escape from Altiplano prison in Almoloya de Juárez, Mexico, in July 2015.

Following Coronel’s arrest, a judge ordered her to remain on remand at a hearing, while another member of her defense team, attorney Jeffrey Lichtman, is investigating a possible bail request.

According to US investigators, Coronel passed messages from Guzmán to other cartel members from 2012 to 2014 to continue the drug trade while dodging Mexican authorities.

After the arrest El Chapo, In February 2014, Coronel continued to relay the messages her husband gave her when she visited him in prison in Mexico, investigators say.
