El Salvador will receive a donation of a third batch of Pfizer vaccine between April and June through COVAX

The third round of COVAX allocations is already active and will benefit 47 participating countries, including El Salvador. The government of El Salvador has not yet made the official announcement of the arrival of this third batch of vaccines donated through Covax.

As specified in the document, the third round of allocations was carried out in accordance with the fair allocation mechanism for COVID-19 vaccines, through the COVAX Service, which was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), in consultation with its Member States.

The allocation decision was based on the eligibility of countries that could receive products that require specific storage conditions and ultra-cold chain (UCC). For future Pfizer-BioNTech product assignments, eligible entrants may change based on, among other factors, UCC’s storage and handling capacity.

The Alliance for Vaccination, popularly known as GAVI, is an international association that aims to improve access to vaccines in developing countries, especially for children. This alliance is made up of public and private entities, including governments, organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Bank, pharmaceutical companies, civil society and philanthropic foundations. and the Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the founding members of GAVI.

The country has already received a first batch of 51,480 doses of frozen vaccines, which were introduced on March 22. With the new allocation, El Salvador would have received 880 doses of Pfizer vaccine through the Covax 191 program.

According to information from the Gavi program, El Salvador will receive a total of 225,600 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine from February to May; To date, the Government has received only 33,600 doses of this pharmaceutical product. In other words, about 192,000 of the UK’s pharmaceuticals are due to arrive.

In total, the Government of El Salvador has so far received 1,203,600 doses of vaccines against COVID-19, according to official data, received 85,080 doses donated through the COVAX program, 20,000 doses were made a direct purchase from AstraZeneca, plus 1 millions of CoronaVac bought from China and 150,000 donated by the Asian government.
