Players in Guild Wars found an eight-year-old Easter egg this week after a former game developer offered some hints and teases to help people move in the right direction.
Earlier this month, Vlambeer developer Jan Willem Nijman asked others to share the Easter eggs and secrets hidden in their Twitter games. Hundreds of developers responded tweet, sharing a lot of secrets. Matthew Moore, former developer at ArenaNet, explained that hidden in Guild Wars it was a secret weapon which could only be found after talking to NPCs known as Xulani archives. But he admitted that it was too well hidden, because no one had ever found it.
This tweet, plus a small note left by Moore on GW wiki and more suggestions and teasing helped the community in the right direction. Before that, no one had linked the points that the dialogue spoken by the Xulani archivists were clues to a hidden weapon. With this new information, players began to try to find a solution to this puzzle. It was not easy, as documented in it Fir Reddit. Meanwhile, Moore warned Easter egg hunters that there was a real chance this Easter egg would not work for nearly a decade.
“It was designed as an Easter egg,” Moore said in a wiki tracking note. “Which means we haven’t tested it as rigorously as the core content (or even outside of our broadcast environment) and it was never meant to be core content. Yesterday, someone finally found the hidden weapon. Reddit user Evaziel posted a screenshot of Silver Edge statistics titled “Found iiiiiiiiiit yeahhhhhh.”
