The massive container ship that blocked the Suez Canal for almost a week last month could take off, but it doesn’t escape without a take-off – in fact, it doesn’t go anywhere until a compensatory fee is paid.
Egypt is demanding a considerable payment, which could reach $ 1 billion, while local authorities are investigating how the ship was caught in the canal, closing a key waterway, according to the Wall Street Journal.
“The ship will remain here until investigations are completed and compensation is paid,” Osama Rabie, president of the Suez Canal Authority, said on Thursday.
“We hope for a speedy agreement. Once it accepts compensation, the ship will be allowed to move. ”
The crash caused “chaos on the heavily trafficked waterway, blocking $ 9 billion a day in global trade and (putting) more stress on supply chains already stretched during the coronavirus pandemic,” The Post reported earlier.
