Ecuador: The ruling party expels President Moreno

Ecuador’s ruling party, Alianza País, reported on Thursday that it had ousted President Lenin Moreno, who also served as national director, with just over two months to go before his term ends.

Last week, the group opened a disciplinary case over alleged violations of the government’s plan and abandonment of the movement’s political leadership, for which Moreno asked the Electoral Council to resign or disband.

In a statement, Alianza País stated that the national leadership did not accept his resignation and “determined his expulsion as a militant and, therefore, his retirement (within the party).

Moreno, who has not yet commented on the decision, ends his term on May 24. Together with former President Rafael Correa (2007-2017) he founded Alianza País more than 14 years ago. Now none of them are part of that force.

The political movement became strongest between 2007 and 2017 while Correa was in power, although after being succeeded by Moreno he lost prominence and in the last presidential election his candidate barely got 1.54% of the vote.

When Correa left the government in mid-2017, he settled in Belgium, where his wife is from, and despite being sentenced to corruption for eight years in prison, he insisted the charges against him were due to political persecution. .
