ABU DHABI – Dustin Poirier believes that nothing came out of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s meeting with Dana White.
During the UFC’s third internship on Abu Dhabi’s “Fight Island,” the recently retired champion met with White to discuss his future. Subsequently, the UFC president claimed that Nurmagomedov had told him that he would be open to return if one of the most important light weights really impressed him.
With a massive slight clash between Poirier (26-6 MMA, 18-5 UFC) and Conor McGregor at the helm of Saturday’s UFC 257 event, a new competitor no. 1 will probably be consolidated.
But despite all this, Poirier believes that the title image remains unclear.
“I thought we’d have some clarity on whether he was retired or not,” Poirier told MMA Junkie. “I did not think it would be a (gray) area. I thought it would be black or white, yes or no. We are almost in the same position we were in before they had the meeting. ”
With Nurmagomedov (29-0 MMA, 13-0 UFC) never officially giving up the championship, Poirier did not expect his rematch with McGregor to be for the title, but he certainly sees big implications with a victory.
“I didn’t think a belt would be thrown at it, because Dana already said there was no way this fight would be for a belt, so I believed him when he said that,” Poirier said. “I think the winner of this fight is fighting for the next belt. I think everyone knows that. But I wish I had a clear answer, but everything is fine. It is what it is. I have to fight first.
“The plan is to defeat Conor McGregor by any means necessary. Blood and courage and fighting for the world title again. ”
