Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier gained a lot of goodwill before their untitled fight at UFC 257 in January, but that seems to have disappeared.
The two lightweight fighters threw themselves on social media on Sunday, less than three months before their trilogy match scheduled for UFC 264 on July 10th. year: a donation from McGregor to the charity Poirier, The Good Fight Foundation.
Prior to UFC 257, McGregor said he would donate $ 500,000 to the Poirier charity and build a gym for disadvantaged youth in his hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana, Poirier. On Sunday, Poirier accused McGregor of ignoring his attempts to donate after the fight, which Poirier won by TKO in the second round.
“This is a fun prediction!” wrote Poirier, with reference to a knockout prediction from McGregor. “You also predicted a donation for my foundation and you and your team are no longer responsible after the January fight. See you soon”.
McGregor, who praised his philanthropic efforts in Ireland during the coronavirus pandemic, acknowledged in a reply to Poirier that he had not yet made a donation, but said he was waiting for details on how the money would be used.
“A donation, not a debt” McGregor wrote on Twitter. “I waited for the plans for the money that never came. I do it with all my donations. I know where it goes point by point. Otherwise it goes on foot. As with many of these foundations, unfortunately. I was right “.
McGregor’s agent, Audie Attar, also responded to Poirier’s accusation on Twitter and appeared to indicate that the donation will continue to be made.
Poirier’s foundation is well known in the MMA community. Former UFC light equipment champion Khabib Nurmagomedov also made a donation in 2019. Among other projects, the foundation built a playground for children with special needs and provided backpacks to schools.
On Monday morning, McGregor went so far as to say that the fight with the trilogy against Poirier had been stopped and that he would be “Fighting with someone else on the 10th.” However, in another post, eight minutes later, he threatened that Poirier would pay for his comments with his physical well-being.
The series between McGregor and Poirier currently stands at 1-1. McGregor got a first-round tie over Poirier when they were both heavy in 2014. Poirier avenged that loss in the January rematch.
