Dumfries, Senna’s 1986 teammate and Le Mans winner, dies at the age of 62

The British driver also won 24 hours at Le Mans

Brit Johnny Dumfries, who was a teammate with Brazilian Ayrton Senna in the Lotus team in 1986 and this in 1988 he won 24 hours at Le Mans, died at the age of 62, reports on Monday, the official website of the World Cup Formula 1.

Dumfries, 7th Marquess of Bute and whose real name was John Colum Crichton-Stuart, was best known for being Ayrton Senna’s teammate at Lotus in the 1986 season. The Brazilian would have chosen him in the face of the prospect of a tougher teammate like Derek Warwick.

His best result was fifth place at that year’s Hungarian Grand Prix. He also finished sixth in Australia.

Two years after his only F1 season, Dumfries built his reputation by winning the 1988 24-hour victory at Le Mans with Jan Lammers and Andy Wallace at the wheel of a Jaguar XJR-9LM.

In a statement confirming his passing after a brief illness, the Dumfries family said: “The spirit and indomitable energy that Johnny brought to his life will be greatly missed, as well as the immense warmth and love with which he embracing the family ”.
