Drifting will recharge your Mercedes AMG Hybrid battery

You’ve heard of regenerative braking of electric vehicles – you know how the battery recovers some energy every time you use the brakes – but I have a feeling you’ll all love the new mid-trip charging solution that Mercedes has developed for the AMG Hybrid: drifting.

The company kept that little Easter egg hidden at its initial launch AMG hybrid line which was inspired by Formula 1 technology. You can check it out in the hybrid strategy section of a new video from Mercedes. The regenerative drift bar comes at 12:17, but the whole video is very interesting if you had a few unanswered questions about technology:

It is important to note here that we are still not entirely clear about all the details about exactly how this technology works. Or anything from the hybrid technology introduced to these cars, by the way. Mercedes has kept everything under cover for now, instead choosing to release some information. So, we move away from what the guys in the video are talking about and pair it with the information in Merc’s initial press releases.

An Easter egg has come out of software development: when you travel, you can recover as well, ”said Jochen Schmitz, a hybrid strategy developer at Mercedes. We use the electrical system to slow down or remove the charge from the ICE by inserting it into the battery. And then, when the slippery state is over, ICE is already at full load and you can accelerate much faster. ”

So you can recharge while moving or while losing a little control in other ways.

Of course, the specifics of how it will work – including all the specific Mercedes technology and systems involved – are still unclear. Which you can probably understand by the fact that Mercedes has released an entire video in a Q&A style to clarify some of the most complex pieces of technology. But the whole concept? Pretty damn cool.
