Dramatic video shows Indonesia’s Sinabung volcano throwing ash 16,000 feet into the sky

Of Indonesia Mount Sinabung erupted on Tuesday, sending volcanic material up to 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) into the sky and depositing ash in nearby villages. Activity at the volcano in North Sumatra province has increased in the last week, with authorities recording 13 times when it released ash clouds.

The dramatic video from the Indonesian Volcanological Study shows the ash bread reaching up to the sky.

There were no new evacuations due to activity and no disruptions of flights in the region were reported.

The 2,600-meter (8,530-foot) Sinabung remained dormant for four centuries before erupting in 2010, killing two people. Another eruption in 2014 killed 17 people, while seven died in a 2016 eruption.

The volcano, one of two currently erupting in Indonesia, has sporadically come to life since then.

About 30,000 people have been forced to leave their homes around Sinabung in recent years.

Sinabung is among over 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, located on “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines surrounding the Pacific Ocean. In total, the ring also includes about 450 volcanoes, including all the most active volcanoes in the US
