San Pedro Sula.

The doctor died on Monday Enrique Octavio Samayoa Moncada, former Minister of Health and former President of the Medical College of Honduras.

It was learned that Dr. Samayoa died in a private hospital in San Pedro Sula, where he was detained fighting covid-19 since a few days ago.

The death of the former Minister of Health was confirmed by Carlos Umaña, president of the Medical Association of the Honduran Institute of Social Security (IHSS) in San Pedro Sula.

“Our condolences to the family and the medical union for the death of Dr. Enrique Samayoa Moncada Former Minister of Health and former President of the CMH,” Umaña wrote on Twitter.

Enrique Samayoa Moncada graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Honduras (Change) in 1959. He was Minister of Health between 1994 and 1998.

In Honduras, more than 70 doctors infected with the new coronavirus have died. The medical union was one of the most affected by the pandemic, which is why doctors have repeatedly asked the government for anti-vaccine vaccines.

The National Risk Management System (Sinager) reported last night that Honduras has 173,729 cases of covid-19 and 4,260 deaths from the disease, although the number could be higher.

In late March, Honduras began vaccinating medical and administrative staff in hospitals, after the state of Israel donated 5,000 doses of Moderna vaccine; just over 2,500 people have been inoculated, but there are still thousands of workers in Health waiting for the vaccine.

Last week, the Honduran government signed an agreement with Russia to purchase Sputnik V vaccine.
