Douglas County reports 9 new cases of the California COVID-19 variant

(WOWT) – Below are today’s vaccination updates, as well as data reports on new cases and other COVID-19 statistics reported by health officials in Nebraska and Iowa.

Douglas County Update

The Douglas County Health Department confirmed on Saturday that nine California cases had been found (B.1.429). Just one day after the state announced its first case with COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7 found in the UK, DHHS also confirmed that four additional cases were found by the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory.

Two cases have been identified in Public Health Solutions, one in Lancaster-Lincoln and one in East Central. This is a total of 13 cases of the California variant.

Officials say the California version is spreading more easily, but available vaccines are effective against it.

Lincoln-Lancaster Update

The health department of Lincoln-Lancaster County confirmed on Saturday its first case of the California variant COVID-19, called B.1.429. The case was identified as a man over 60 years old.

Officials say the variant was identified by special tests at the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory.

The health department also reported an additional 65 cases, bringing the community total to 28,151. The total number of deaths remains at 221.

Vaccination clinics

Douglas County

Until further notice, Douglas County clinics will provide COVID-19 vaccinations to eligible residents at the following times and locations:

  • MARI / MIERI – The Church of the Community of Christ, located at 404 S. 108th St., clinics will offer vaccinations between 9:00 and 17:00
  • WED / FRI – CHI Immanuel Medical Center, located at 72nd Street and Sorensen Parkway, vaccinations will be administered between 9:00 and 17:00
  • JU / SUN – Nebraska Drug Testing and Vaccination Clinic, located at 144th Street and Millard Avenue, vaccinations will be administered from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday and from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday.
  • SAT – Rasmussen Center of Creighton University, located at 702 N. 17 St., vaccinations will be administered between 9:00 and 21:00

In addition, the Kroc Center is planning clinics from 10:00 to 16:00, February 26, March 4 and March 8. However, as of Thursday, all appointments for these clinics are complete.

Pottawattamie County

County residents over the age of 65 are asked to register through the Pottawattamie County vaccination website. Anyone in need of assistance can also contact the Agency for Aging Connection Areas. 712-328-2540 to sign up for a meeting by phone.

NEBRASKA vaccine hotline: Governor Pete Ricketts asked the Nebrascans to call 402-552-6645 or free of charge at 833-998-2275 for more information on the Nebraska COVID-19 vaccination process. DO NOT call your local health department.

IOWA Vaccine Helpline: Older Yowans or at home seeking help scheduling a COVID-19 vaccination meeting can call 1-866-468-7887 from 8 am to 4:30 pm Monday-Friday; or contact Aging Connections Agency to 712-328-2540 or 1-800-432-9209.
