The desire to become queen and to represent Puerto Rico made 17 young people wait a year for the celebration of the Miss World Puerto Rico pageant. Despite the challenges they face due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these girls bet on their dream and decided to go further by participating in this competition, whose final will take place on April 24, at the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel, in a special broadcast that will be broadcast at 20:00 on TeleOnce.

These young women were supposed to be part of the competition last year, but due to the global health situation, the event was canceled until this year. “Initially it was a group of 20, but due to the pandemic, this group of persevering girls remained. I have to give credit to our director Ana Avilés, who was in charge of organizing the virtual workshops, so that she can continue “, said Wilnelia Merced, owner of the local franchise and Miss World 1975.

One of the peculiarities of this contest is that it organizes five mini-contests to choose more of the finalists. This year, those events had to be done virtually, according to Merced.

The first mini-competition that took place was the sports competition, where the young woman from Santa Isabel, Andreína Vega Rosa, was the winner, as it was announced today in a press conference. The winners of the remaining four mini-competitions (beauty with purpose, top model, talent and best body) will be announced on the preliminary day, the date of which will be announced soon.

Merced said the young women hardly saw each other in person, the first time last Sunday, when they finally managed to share remotely during a photo shoot. This year, the last evening of the event will be called the “Festival of Beauty and Purpose”, to emphasize the raison d’être of this contest that aims to raise awareness among young women about the importance of helping society.

“In this contest we choose girls who, beyond their physical beauty, show the world their human qualities, their empathy for the noblest causes and possessors of a big heart. In Miss World, the winning girl becomes an ambassador for countless causes sponsored by the organization, which, in turn, will lead her to visit several countries around the world to participate in charitable events, “reiterated Merced.

He added that this year’s winner will be entrusted with hosting the international pageant, which will take place in Puerto Rico on December 16, as Puerto Rican Stephanie Del Valle, who became Miss World in 2016, being the second Puerto Rican to hold this award. the crown.

“We are glad that this year we will have time to prepare well the winner who will be our world representative and host. So we want the winning young woman to have all the knowledge about the wonderful places in Puerto Rico and to be a girl who can be projected in the world, “added Merced, who this year celebrates 45 years since she brought the first Miss World Crown for Puerto Rico.

The former queen said that on the last night of the event – which will be hosted by Fernando Allende – the ten semifinalists will be announced. Five of them will be chosen in mini-contests and the other five through interviews with the jury.

Wilnelia Merced said she is currently assessing whether the final will take place with or without an audience. If so, they would only be relatives of the candidates and would be done by strict invitation.

Among the prizes that the winner will receive this year is a scholarship from Ana G. Méndez University to carry out a master’s degree. The new sovereign will be crowned by the outgoing queen, Daniella Rodríguez, who won the local competition in 2019.

Merced hopes that among the 17 participants, there will be the next international Miss World, which will be crowned on the island. “We have many possibilities because they are very beautiful, well-prepared girls and we will have time for the public to identify with the girl,” he concluded.
