Former President Donald Trump and his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., have hired attorney Jesse Binnall to represent each of them in a lawsuit filed by Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-CA), according to a people with knowledge about matters.
Binnall, a Virginia-based Republican lawyer, previously represented former Trump national security adviser Mike Flynn with attorney Sidney Powell after prosecutors accused him of lying to the FBI about his communications with Russia’s ambassador to the United States.
More recently, Binnall filed a lawsuit in Nevada on behalf of the Trump campaign, which tried to overthrow President Joe Biden’s election victory there, and he also rejected the Republican Defense, a legal group partially founded by Powell, in a lawsuit. Defamation Filed by Mastery Voting Systems.
Trump Jr. is now the second member of the Trump family to be represented by Binnall after the lawyer signed to represent former President Trump in a similar lawsuit filed by Bennie Thompson, the Democratic congressman in Mississippi.
Both Thompson and Swalwell’s lawsuits allege that Trump and his associates violated the Ku Klux Klan law of 1871 and that Trump’s rhetoric was part of a deliberate attempt to incite insurgents to disrupt Congress’ certification of President Biden’s victory over January 6th.
Binnall also represented Trump in a lawsuit filed in November against the then president, his campaign and the Republican National Committee. The lawsuit alleges that Trump “tried to overturn the election result by giving up voters, especially black voters,” in part by “intimidating election officials and voter tabulators while counting votes.”
