Dominicana, Águilas, Fermín and Canó make history

MAZATLÁN – Finally, MLB’s biggest stars, Robinson Canó and Yadier Molina, embraced an emotional congratulatory hug as the Dominican Republic won the Caribbean Series title by winning 1-1 Puerto Rico on Saturday night.

Canó played a Caribbean series for the first time and, after winning the World Classic and Major League Baseball World Series in recent years, added another crown to his record.

“Another great achievement for the Dominican team, I managed it in the Clásico (World Cup), for me a great honor, a pride to be able to be in another thanks to God, it’s something I can’t really describe”, Canó said during the holiday.

“What more can I ask of God,” he added of winning World Series and Caribbean Series titles in his first appearance.

Aguilas Cibaeñas gave the 21st crown to the Dominican Republic defeating the Criollos at the Teodoro Mariscal Stadium, in a tense match that was decided in the second half and which closed the 2021 Mazatlán Caribbean Series.

The MVP of the event was the Dominican outfield Juan Lagares, who led in one race in the final and had eight in the series, hitting a pair of home runs.

“Super happy, thank God, great victory, we have finished our work,” he said, adding that we were the first team to win the Latin American Small World Series with an unbeaten record of 7-0, giving the Dominican Republic double championship.

Manager Águilas Cibaeñas recognizes the performance of his players.

Manager Félix Fermín made history and reaffirmed himself as the helmsman with the most championships reaching four. He set the record for most wins to 28 and is also the first to lead a team to the title with a 7-0 record.

“It’s not easy to achieve these achievements,” Fermín said. “God bless me, I kept my health and the truth that I had a great team,” he added.

Next year, the Dominican Republic will defend the crown and will have the opportunity to seek the championship three times in their own country, as they will be the organizers of the 2021 Caribbean Series.
