NEW YORK (AP) – Dolly Parton sings about daily office workers working “9 to 5” for over 40 years, but now the country’s icon sings about entrepreneurs working “5 to 9” to pursue their dreams after school.
The success of the 1980 Grammy Award-winning legend was overturned by Squarespace – a company that helps users build and host their own websites – for a Super Bowl commercial that starts on Tuesday. Oscar winner Damien Chazelle to the fame of “La La Land” directed the spot.
“Many people over the years have wanted to change the lyrics to suit certain things they do. I really thought it was a great thing, especially for Squarespace. They are so loved by people, by new entrepreneurs who work after hours to start their own business “, said Parton. “5 to 9 seemed like a perfect thing when they released it.”
Parton uses Squarespace to create a website for her new fragrance, DollyFragrance.com.
The singer, who is also an actor, producer, humanitarian and many more, said she can relate to business people who work non-stop to achieve their goals.
“Well, I work 365 (days a year). I always work from 5 to 9, from 9 to 5. I work all hours of the night and day, ”she said. “Whatever you have to do, you have to do it, no matter how many hours it takes.”
In an interview with The Associated Press, Parton talked about returning “9 to 5” as part of this year’s Super Bowl, donating $ 1 million for coronavirus research. and remembering her brother Randy Parton, who died last month. The answers were edited for length and clarity.
_______
AP: Are you excited to be part of this year’s Super Bowl?
Parton: I’ve been asked to be a part of this several times. It is always such a big commitment. I’ve always been a little crowded. I know it’s just a big commitment. If you do well, you do great. If you do wrong, you do wrong in front of all those people. It seemed like a perfect way to do this.
_______
AP: What was it like to write “9 to 5” 40 years ago?
Parton: This song stays so true for people who go out – you get up in the morning, you shake in the kitchen, you pour your coffee, you try to make your ass, you try to get up and get to work knowing you have to do it . I’m really happy. This is the 40th anniversary of the movie’s “9-5” went out. We celebrate, so this could not have happened at a better time.
_______
AP: You donated $ 1 million to coronavirus research – what made you do that?
Parton: Well, I’m following my heart. I am a person of faith and I pray all the time that God will lead me in the right direction and tell me what to do. When the pandemic first broke out, that was my first thought: “I have to do something to try to find a vaccine.” I just did some research with the people at Vanderbilt (University) – they are wonderful people, they have been so good over the years with my people during periods of illness and all that. I just asked if I could donate a million dollars to research a vaccine.
I get a lot more credit than I deserve, but I was happy to be a part of it all.
_______
AP: Did you make your fire?
Parton: Well. I’m not going to take mine until more people take theirs. I don’t want him to look like he just jumped his tail just because I donated money. I’m very funny about that. I’ll take mine, but I’ll wait. I’m at the age where I could have legally gotten mine last week. I’m 75 years old. I was going to do it for my birthday and I thought, “No, don’t do that.” You’re going to look like you’re just doing a show. None of my work is like that. I wasn’t doing it for a show. I’ll take mine. I want it. I’m going to take it. When I get it, I’ll probably do it on the camera so people know and I’ll tell them the truth, if I have symptoms and all that. We hope it will encourage people. I won’t jump the line just because I could.
_______
AP: How do you feel when you’re 75?
Parton: Well, I intend to be more. I have no plans to slow down because the number says it should. I’m not paying attention to that. I wake up with new dreams every day. I try to make the most of every year I’ve lived. I’ve been doing this since I was little. I’ll do it until I get back. We hope this will not be soon.
_______
AP: Your brother Randy recently died of cancer. How do you resist?
Parton: Well, we have a broken heart. I loved him so much. He fought a lot for the last year. Randy was a wonderful artist, animator. It was very dear to me. He was one of my younger brothers. I lost my little brother last year, about the same time of year. It was indeed a double misfortune for all of us. There is a certain kind of peace that comes from the fact that we know that he is at peace and that he was suffering, and we did not like that. He is loved with love. Just go with a hole in your heart and a knot in your stomach. You think about him, you love him, you try to keep your precious memories. You must continue. We are a close family, so we support each other.
