Disney is changing the “look” for cast members in an effort to create more inclusion in parks

Disney is making significant changes to the “Disney Look” guidelines for cast members in an effort to improve inclusion in the park.

Much of the review is the removal of all gender references. The company said all members of the distribution now have the same options, including when it comes to makeup jewelry and nail polish.

Hair length is also now at the discretion of the cast member, however, unnatural colors are not yet allowed. Facial hair must now be “cared for and well maintained”, with no restrictions on length or shape.

The company also allows cast members to have tattoos visible for the first time, as long as they are not offensive and cannot be on the cast member’s face, neck or head.

“We want our guests to see their own environments and traditions reflected in the stories, experiences and products they encounter in their interactions with Disney. And we want our cast members – and future cast members – to feel like they belong at work, ”said Josh D’Amaro, president of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, in a statement.

D’Amaro said inclusion efforts extend beyond the “Disney Look” changes.

“We are reinventing our attractions to be more comprehensive, such as future improvements to Jungle Cruise and new adventures with Princess Tiana,” he said. “We celebrate the diverse and inspired stories of the cast and our fans with collaborations from creators and interesting experiences, such as the Jazz Soul exhibition at Walt Disney World Resort.”

Disney is also looking to diversify its suppliers, teasing that it will have “more details about this commitment in the future.”

The company said these steps are “just the beginning”, but did not explain what the next steps would be to improve inclusion in the park.

“There is still much to be done, but we are committed to listening, learning and making significant improvements,” the statement said.

Tattoo artist Rolly T-Rex of The Divine Canvass Tattoos in Orlando said the change could help tattoos be more accepted.

“I’ve tattooed people who work at Disney and it always has to be hidden,” he said. “Tattoos are so normal now. I’m everywhere. You know you see people with tattoos on children’s channels. My child watches videos of people with tattoos. ”

Len Testa is the president of TouringPlans.com. He said changes to Disney’s appearance standards are also important for a comfortable work environment.

“Inclusion. Making everyone feel welcome. This includes not only invitations, but also the members of the distribution “, said Testa.
