Discord rejects Microsoft’s agreement

Discordia ends talks to sell to Microsoft or other companies, Wall Street Journal reports. The popular online chat application was reportedly on sale to Microsoft in March for a price that valued Discord at over $ 10 billion.

Wall Street Journal writes that Discord had talks with at least three other companies, but decided to remain independent because “it is going well”. Discord has about 140 million monthly users and generated revenues of about $ 130 million in 2020, but is still not profitable, according to WSJ.

Microsoft’s interest in Discord has had a lot to do with the latter’s role at home for online communities. The application is a destination for creators who cultivate their own forums, as well as for their own groups focused on video and board role-playing games. Apart from its Xbox and Surface devices, Microsoft does not have a consumer-oriented way to be a part of most people’s daily lives. The teams were opened for personal use, but Discord has a built-in familiarity and is not interpreted as enterprise software. Wall Street Journal writes that both Discord and Microsoft are still open for renewed discussions – but for now, Discord is on its way.
