Dolphins have the option no. 3 in the 2021 NFL draft and in dire need of explosive players
MOBILE, Ala. – Winner of the Heisman Trophy, DeVonta Smith, imagine himself in the Miami Dolphins uniform reuniting with his former teammate Tua Tagovailoa, and the idea could be reciprocal.
“We just talked about how good it would be to come back,” Smith agreed The NFL network after Tuesday’s Senior Bowl training session on the possibility of re-teaming with the Dolphins starting defender. “Not much, but little of it.”
Dolphins have the option no. 3 in the draft from the NFL in 2021 and have a great need for more explosive players for Tagovailoa. Smith, who became the first recipient to win the Desisman Howard Heisman Trophy in 1991 and only the second in 1940, would certainly meet this criterion.
Smith attends meetings and follows practices with Dolphins coaches in the Senior Bowl, but does not participate on the field due to a dislocated finger suffered in the victory of the Alabama national championship over Ohio. He had 12 receptions for 215 meters and three touchdowns in that game before injury.
On Tuesday, he wore a black robe in his right hand.
The biggest question about Smith before the project is whether his size will prevent him from becoming a top-five. Alabama listed Smith as a 6-foot-1, 175 pound and refused to weigh in at the Senior Bowl on Tuesday. He said he will wait until Day Pro in Alabama to make full measurements.
Coach Dolphins, Brian Flores doesn’t seem too worried that Smith’s size will affect his assessment.
“This guy is a very, very good player. You can say anything you want about the size of a man, but good players are good players. We can all see that, “Flores said Tuesday. “This guy is a very good player. He did a lot of plays in college. He played a lot in the biggest games of the year. You can be agitated all day about things. He is a very good player and it was good to meet him. He is also a good boy “.
Smith played more than his size in college because he regularly found a way to break coverage, broke ground attacks and proved durable during his four-year career in Alabama.
If the Dolphins want Smith, they could have some competition. Mel Goalkeeper Jr., de ESPN, projects Smith to be No. 2 against the New York Jets in his first fake project, with the Dolphins taking Ja’Marr Chase from LSU to number 3.
Runner Najee Harris, Smith’s teammate from Alabama, is also participating under the tutelage of the Dolphins coaches in the Senior Bowl and could also be on the team’s radar to meet Tagovailoa in Miami. The Dolphins have four selections in the top 50 of the NFL draft (numbers 3.18,35 and 50).
