Developers can no longer play eShop graphics with free games

The news comes months after a studio team called Nintendo

This story needs a little background, so let’s get into it.

A few months ago, a number of independent developers called the status of the Nintendo Switch eShop for countless reasons. Claiming to be in a collective state of mobile chaos, these studios shed light on some of the shortcomings of the showcase, as well as the art of rummaging through graphics.

In short, the studios that place their games with a discount of 80-100% had the chance to reach the top sellers, because the store classifies the games on gross units sold. In other words, you could completely master the graphics with abandonware through free indoor and outdoor bike games. Why bring all this again? Well, you can’t do that anymore!

According to the GameDiscoverCo newsletter (to which Destructoid has since gained access), this practice is now dead: at least for promotions with a 100% discount. As the letter points out, other discounts still work, so you can play the charts with other percentages. Like all things Nintendo, it’s a start. Children are steps towards a much bigger problem. GameDiscoverCo claims that a longer-term solution would be to change the charts to classify revenue in real time, just like Steam.

As the newsletter notes, nothing has been made public: this is how Nintendo is sometimes launched.
