Liz Phair presented her detailed future album Sober. The LP arrives on June 4 via Chrysalis. Today (April 14), Phair released the latest single from the recording, entitled “Spanish Doors”. Listen to it below and scroll down to find it Soberthe tracklist and the album.

“The Spanish Doors” is “about breaking a beautiful life, when everything you mattered to is suddenly thrown to be grabbed,” as Phair said in a press release. She added:

I was inspired by a friend who was going through a divorce, but the actions in the lyrics are mine. I mean hiding in the bathroom when everyone around you is having a good time, but your life has just fallen apart. You look in the mirror and wonder who you are now, shadows of doubt creeping into your eyes. Just a few moments ago you were a whole person, confident and now you wonder how you will ever get the magic back.

Sober is Phair ‘s first album with new material in 11 years, after 2010 Funstyle. The new LP features previously shared tracks “Good Side” and “Hey Lou”. The record was produced by Phair’s longtime collaborator Brad Wood, whom he also worked on. Exiled to Guyville, Whip-Smart, and whitechocolatespaceegg. “I found inspiration for Sober delving into an early era of my musical development, I spent my art school years listening to Art Rock and New Wave music non-stop on my Walkman, ”said Phair. “The English Beat, The Specials, Madness, REMs Automatic for the People, Yazoo, Psychedelic Furs, Talking Heads, Velvet Underground, Laurie Anderson and Cars. The city came to life for me when I was young, the troops in my headphones gave me the courage to explore. ”

Phair added:

Sober it may be about the party. It can be self-deception. It can be about watching the first flow of love or, in fact, any mood that allows you to escape a time of reality and to exist on a happier plane. It is not self-destructive or out of control; it is as simple as the cycle of dreaming and waking. That’s why I chose to symbolize Sober with a crossroads, a street sign. It is best described as a simple pivot of perspective. When you meet your “ish” again after a period of sobriety, there is a deep recognition and emotional relief that floods you, reminding you that there is more in life, more in reality and in your own soul than you are aware. But if you get too good or too hungry, you will lose that critical balance.
