New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday evening that he had requested local TV outlets to “ withdraw low-flying helicopters ” to avoid “ unintentional tensions ” when demonstrations broke out in the city following the former’s conviction. “I have asked local news outlets to withdraw low-flying helicopters out of respect for the New Yorkers demonstrating tonight,” the Democratic mayor said. tweeted. “While the news definitely has the right to broadcast tonight’s rallies, there is a way to cover the events without inadvertently increasing tensions.”
Earlier, the official NYPD Twitter account stressed that “Helicopters over the protest at the Barclays Center [in Brooklyn] are not NYPD, but those of TV stations.
“We’ve asked media outlets to stay back and expect them to stick with it,” she added.

Major demonstrations took place in Manhattan and Brooklyn after the announcement that Chauvin had been convicted of murder and manslaughter in Floyd’s death. There were no immediate reports of arrests, injuries or damage.
