David Bowie Tribute new album announced: Helado Negro, Khruangbin, We Are KING and many more

British record label BBE Music has announced a new tribute album by David Bowie. Modern love arrives on May 28 and features covers from Bowie’s catalog of Helado Negro, Khruangbin, Jeff Parker, We Are KING, Meshell Ndegeocello and more. Today, at what would have been Bowie’s 74th birthday (and the fifth anniversary of Blackstar), BBE distributed the first single from Modern love. Listen to the cover of We Are KING from “Space Oddity” below and scroll down for the tracklist and LP art, illustrated by Cori Maass.

“There have been so many amazing compositions by Bowie, but ‘Space Oddity’ has always been our favorite,” said Amber KING and Paris Strother in a press release. “It’s so visual; it always felt like a time travel in a play. It tells such a vivid and imaginative story of Major Tom’s journey through space and it was such a cool experience to reimagine what it was like to travel. “

BBE compiled Modern love to highlight Bowie’s connection to soul, R&B, jazz, funk and gospel sounds that influenced his own work. The project was organized by music executive and DJ Drew McFadden, along with BBE Music founder Peter Adarkwah. “I felt that the connection between Bowie and R&B, jazz, funk, gospel and all things soulful has never been explored before,” McFadden said in media reports. “At least not so much in the covers, which tend to lean more towards rock and pop. Sure, there have been a lot of Bowie covers over the years, but none of them really got into what seems to have been a big part of his basic musical style and direction. ”
