Daimler and Portland General Electric (PGE) today unveiled a new “first-of-its-kind” electric truck charging station in Portland, Oregon.
Semi-electric trucks are now coming on the roads in greater numbers and the industry is trying to discover the charging infrastructure to support them.
Today, Daimler and Portland General Electric (PGE) announced an important step in this direction.
They unveiled the first large-scale electric truck charging station in front of the Daimler Truck headquarters in Portland, Oregon:
Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) and Portland General Electric (PGE) today opened to the public the first charging site for heavy electric trucks, called “Electric Island”. Electric Island will help accelerate the development, testing and implementation of zero-emission commercial vehicles (from tank to wheel), such as those manufactured by DTNA.
Here’s a quick video of the charging station:
As you can see, the site is designed so that trucks and buses can easily get in and out of the loading bins.
They will use the station to study the loading of heavy trucks:
- Use of vehicle chargers with a power of up to over one megawatt (over 4 times faster than today’s fastest light vehicle chargers), enabling PGE and DTNA to develop best practices for cost-effective future deployments;
- Integrating heavy-duty charging technology into the PGE smart grid, such as vehicle-network technologies, the second-life use of Daimler battery packs and on-site power generation; and
- Testing information technology opportunities, such as park and energy management, through captive solutions and services.
While it intends to study the 1 MW load, it is not clear whether this capacity is already implemented on site.
Daimler has several electric truck programs that are already delivered to customers, including eActros and Freightliner eCascadia.
