As the US continues to grow its vaccination campaign, on average now more than 3 million photos a day, those in the most vulnerable age group are leading. About 75% of Americans aged 65 and over have received at least one stroke, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and more than half are completely vaccinated.
In a call with reporters on Monday, CDC director Rochelle Walensky said emergency department visits and hospitalizations associated with those 65 and older are declining.
These trends are “good news in terms of the power of vaccination,” Walensky said.
US Covid cases
After a drop in the number of cases due to Easter Sunday, when many states did not report coronavirus data, a tracker from Johns Hopkins University shows that the United States recorded approximately 79,000 new cases of Covid-19 months. The seven-day average of new daily cases is currently at 64,600, up from the nation’s low of about 53,000 cases a day at the end of March, but showing some signs of plateau.
Demographics of people infected with the virus are changing, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky told reporters at a White House press briefing on Monday.
“As indicated by data trends, cases are on the rise nationwide and we see this occurring predominantly in young adults,” Walensky said.
She added that many of the outbreaks for young people are related to youth sports and extracurricular activities. The risks of focus groups can be prevented by timed testing strategies, Walensky said.
Demographic change is a sign that vaccinations are having an impact, according to Walensky, who cited a drop in emergency room visits and hospitalizations associated with those aged 65 and over. Most of that age group received at least one vaccine.
Covid deaths in the USA
The seven-day average of new daily coronavirus deaths is nearly 800, according to Hopkins data, well below the nation’s winter peak.
Walensky said not enough is known about whether the new virus variants are more lethal.
“With these variants, we are still seeing increased transmissibility. We do not yet know about its increased morbidity and mortality,” she said. “However, we must remain very vigilant about these options.”
American vaccines were given
The United States administers an average of seven days of just over 3 million Covid-19 vaccines a day, according to the CDC.
After four consecutive days of more than 3 million doses of vaccine, Monday’s report showed 2.1 million photos. White House Covid-19 Data Director Cyrus Shahphar wrote in a tweet that while Monday’s figures largely reflect weekend vaccinations and therefore usually show a lower number, Easter Sunday was also a lower-than-usual reason for reporting the data.
US share of the vaccinated population
Nearly a third of the US population has received at least one photo of a Covid-19 vaccine, according to CDC data, with 18.8% of Americans fully vaccinated.
