As cases of Covid in the US increase, the country is also administering vaccines designed to prevent the virus from spreading at the fastest rate ever. Cases are on the rise in 27 states, with Michigan continuing to lead the nation in new daily per capita cases.

US Covid cases

Following more than 70,000 cases of coronavirus reported on Monday, the seven-day average of new daily cases in the United States is 68,960, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. This figure increased by 7% compared to a week ago.

Michigan again reported the highest level of new daily population-based cases of Covid, according to a CNBC analysis of Johns Hopkins data. On Monday, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, said the state should “shut things down” as it deals with growth and that a boost to Covid-19 vaccinations will not stop the virus from spreading.

Michigan has nearly 7,300 new average daily cases, close to the state’s maximum pandemic, of more than 8,300 a day in December. Hospitalizations and deaths are also on the rise in the state.

American deaths Covid

The seven-day average of Covid deaths reported daily in the United States is 962, according to Johns Hopkins.

The latest trend in the number of deaths is affected by a massive release of data from about 1,800 deaths in Oklahoma, which has occurred as the Oklahoma State Department of Health moves to reporting guidelines in line with CDC requirements. These deaths are currently reported for April 7, even though they occurred earlier.

Prior to this reporting anomaly, the daily balance of Covid deaths in the US was on a downward trend from record levels in January.

American vaccines were given

CDC data show 2.6 million reported doses of vaccine were given on Monday, bringing the average of seven days of reported doses given in the US to a record 3.2 million per day.

The Food and Drug Administration said on Tuesday it was calling on states to temporarily stop using the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine “as a precaution” after six women in the United States developed a rare blood clotting disorder.

“At this time, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare,” the FDA said in a joint statement with the CDC.

US share of the vaccinated population

More than 120 million people, or 36% of the US population, have received one or more doses of the Covid vaccine. More than 1 in 5 Americans are completely vaccinated, according to the CDC.

Almost 80% of those aged 65 and over have received at least one dose, and 62% are completely vaccinated.
