The United States reported 4.6 million doses of vaccine administered on Saturday, a record one day and another 3.6 million photographs administered on Sunday. This brings the average daily dose administered in the last week to 3.1 million.
At the same time, the country reports 70,000 new coronavirus infections a day, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, a level consistent with the increase last summer, when the average number of cases peaked at 67,000 at the end of July.
No state has more daily infections per capita than Michigan, according to a CNBC analysis of Hopkins data, with the daily number of cases and hospitalizations approaching the state’s previous peaks and growing Covid-19 deaths.
US Covid cases
The United States has reported an average of 70,000 new cases of Covid-19 daily in the past week, Hopkins data show. Although it is well below the country’s winter peak of about 250,000 new cases a day, this figure is consistent with the number of cases reported during the nation’s “second wave” during the summer, which at the time were maximum record.
Michigan has nearly 7,400 new average daily cases, close to the state’s record high of more than 8,300 per day in December. On Friday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer urged high schools to temporarily stop personal learning and urged residents to restrict activities. The governor also demanded that schools voluntarily suspend sports games and that residents avoid meals in person for two weeks in an effort to slow the spread.
The death toll in Michigan is also rising. The state reports an average of 43 Covid deaths a day in the last week, up from 30 a week earlier.
The average daily number of cases increased by 5% or more over a week in 29 states, according to Hopkins data.
Covid deaths in the USA
The U.S. reported an average of 981 daily deaths in Covid-19 in the past week, according to Hopkins data.
The latest trend in the United States in terms of coronavirus deaths is hidden by a bulk release of approximately 1,800 deaths in Oklahoma. These deaths are currently reported for April 7, 2021, despite the fact that they occurred in the weeks or months before. The Oklahoma State Department of Health has announced that the state is in the process of transitioning to data reporting guidelines, in line with the requirements of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is the cause of this increase.
Prior to this reporting anomaly, the daily balance of Covid deaths in the US was on a downward trend from record levels in January.
