COVID vaccines, no appointments required, in three locations in Colorado

Gov. Jared Polis said Tuesday that mass COVID vaccination sites in Denver, Pueblo and Larimer County will now offer non-scheduling COVID-19 prevention injections.

“We really redouble our call on all Coloradans to get vaccinated,” Polis said. “It’s easier than ever. It’s free. Is fast. It’s easy.”

The move comes at another key moment in the state’s pandemic response. The state is in the midst of a fourth wave of cases. Polis announced that 1,963 people from Colorado had given positive results in the last day and 553 people are now hospitalized with COVID-19. This rose 43 in one day and the highest number since the end of January.

“This is very much a race against the clock,” Polis said, adding that about a third of the state’s adults are now fully vaccinated, and just over half of the adults received a first shot. He said more than 65 per cent of people over the age of 60 are fully vaccinated, leading to fewer people in this age group getting sick enough to require hospitalization.

But Polis noted “we have more and more people in the hospital in the 30s, 40s and 50s and 20s.”

In the week of January 10, people aged 20 to 59 accounted for 38% of new COVID-19 hospitalizations. In the week of April 11, that percentage rose to 59% as older age groups embraced the vaccines, which only recently became available to Coloradans between the ages of 16 and 50.

The state epidemiologist provided new information about the percentage of people who tested positive for COVID-19 after vaccination in Colorado. Dr. Rachel Herlihy said the number is very small.

The state examined data on “discovery cases” from one week to early April. Of the nearly one million people completely vaccinated, only 140 people tested positive for the virus – a much lower rate of less than 1%: 0.014%. Herlihy showed reporters a slide, mentioning that one in seven thousand results.

“Vaccination will be our ticket to this pandemic,” Herlihy said.

Herlihy said that those who are fully vaccinated were almost 95% less likely to get a positive test than those who are not vaccinated, which is in line with national studies.

The governor now stressed the importance of vaccinating younger Coloradoans.

“Now it’s your turn. We have enough for you. Come and receive it. Don’t protect yourself just because yes, this virus can eliminate perfectly healthy people in their twenties or thirties who are healthy in a day and on a fan a week later, “Polis said.” It’s important that everyone 16 and older get vaccinated. And the sooner we can do that, the sooner we can put this pandemic behind us. in Colorado history. ”
