COVID vaccine updates: US could be on the verge of a new wave of coronavirus, experts say

NEW YORK (WABC) – Optimism is spreading in the United States as deaths from COVID-19 decrease and restrict restrictions and open vaccinations for younger adults. But across Europe, fear is mounting with another wave of infections that is closing schools and cafes and bringing new blockages.

The divergent ways of the pandemic on the two continents may be related in part to the much more successful launch of the vaccine in the US and the spread of more contagious variants in Europe.

US health experts, however, say what is happening in Europe should serve as a warning against ignoring social distance or giving up other guarantees too soon.

“Each of these countries has had bait like the ones we have now, and each has taken an upward trend after ignoring known mitigation strategies,” said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “They just took their eyes off the ball.”

Unemployment claims in the US rise to 770,000, with still large layoffs
The number of Americans claiming unemployment benefits rose to 770,000 last week, a sign that layoffs remain high even as much of the US economy is constantly recovering from the coronavirus recession. Thursday’s report from the Department of Labor showed that unemployment claims had risen from 725,000 a week earlier. Figures have fallen sharply since the depths of the recession last spring, but show that employers in some industries continue to lay off workers. Prior to the pandemic, unemployment benefits had never exceeded 700,000 in a single week. The four-week average of receivables, which smooths out weekly variations, fell to 746,000, the lowest since the end of November.
