COVID vaccine in Chicago today: eligibility for phase 1C, date to be announced by city

CHICAGO (WLS) – Chicago health officials will present an update on Wednesday on the city’s COVID vaccine distribution plan, including when vaccinations will be extended to Group 1C.

The city is to announce the start date of March 29 for its next vaccination phase. In 1C several essential workers are eligible, including those in hospitality. construction, law, banking and media, as well as citizens between 16 and 64 years of age with severe health conditions.

Broadly speaking, if you have a underlying condition, you may be able to get a vaccine in April or May, said Dr. Allison Arwady, director, Chicago Dept. of Public Health.

Dr. Arwady also made it clear that seniors will remain the city’s priority for the rest of this month, but believes that as vaccine supply grows, the city is now able to open broader population programming.

1C is the last priority group before vaccinations open to the general population.

This expansion is announced only for Chicago residents. Collared counties have not yet made their own decisions in this regard.

“Because we have the vaccine available, we will of course open appointments for other groups,” said Cook County Council President Toni Preckwinkle.

There continues to be a significant increase in federal vaccine supplies. Next week’s combined allocation to Illinois and Chicago is just 1% higher than this week’s and 8% higher than last week’s deliveries on CDC data.

Meanwhile, Gov. JB Pritzker has launched new plans for a gradual reopening of Illinois.

The governor is now considering relaxing restrictions, including raising the current limit of 50 people to gatherings at event venues.

The governor could also contain green light conventions, reduce space requirements in restaurants, and include the vaccination rate of a community in reopening values, as requested by suburban mayors.

“It gives people hope to be able to look at something and say that if we get to this level, we will have this now,” said Darien Mayor Joseph Marches.
