COMMERCE CITY, Columbia (CBS4) – The COVID-19 vaccination clinic in Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City was put on hold on Wednesday afternoon after 11 patients experienced side effects after receiving the shot. The Health Belt initially said that 18 people were affected, but later corrected this number to 11 people.
The site used the Johnson & Johnson / Janssen coronavirus vaccine.

“We got there around 2:30 early, and then about five cars away to get the shot and they stopped it,” recalled Paul Doucett, who was scheduled to receive the vaccine on the spot. . “There were two ambulances there. One was firing while we were firing and there was already one installed there. It’s been at least an hour and a half before they said, “We’re not comfortable with side effects, so we need to reschedule you guys.”
The Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment says patients have experienced symptoms such as nausea and dizziness. They add that there is no reason to believe that other people who have been vaccinated at this site should be concerned.

The site is operated by Centura Health. A spokesman said 1,777 people had been shot, 11 of whom had side effects. The belt did not say what the symptoms were, but only that they are “according to typical reactions”, according to medical experts.
“We have seen a limited number of side effects from the vaccine,” said Centura spokeswoman Lindsay Radford. “We followed our protocols and, with great caution, we made the decision – in partnership with the state – to suspend operations for the rest of the day.”
The belt says nine people who experienced a reaction were monitored on the spot and sent home, while two others were taken to hospital for further surveillance.

A total of 640 patients were unable to receive the vaccine on Wednesday. The Health Belt plans to reschedule these appointments for April 11 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Doucett acknowledges that he now has some concerns about receiving the J&J vaccine and is pleased that his vaccination has been rescheduled. He says things stopped when he was in line.
“(They) fainted with some water and said, ‘There’s a little problem, just wait a minute.’ And they came back about an hour later and then they said that there were too many side effects and that they didn’t feel comfortable with it and that they would reschedule it.
“I’m glad I didn’t get shot and that I had some side effects or something,” he said.
But in the end, he will be happy to be vaccinated.
“I’m a sailor, so I’m not worried. I’ll take the shot if I say it’s good for me, if Dr. Fauci says take the shot, I’ll take the shot. I have confidence in science, “he said.
His wife had already received the J&J vaccine earlier in the day at the Ball Arena vaccination site in Denver and says she is doing great.
“This will not discourage me at all,” he said.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, J & J / Janssen is a single-dose COVID vaccine that has been 63% effective in clinical trials. Possible side effects of the blow to the arm include pain, redness and swelling. Other side effects in the body may include fatigue, headache, muscle aches, chills, fever and nausea. The CDC said the side effects usually start within a day or two of the vaccine and should go away in a few days.

CDPHE says there were 10 previous reactions at community vaccination sites prior to this incident, according to the vaccine adverse event reporting system. The CDC and the FDA manage the system.
