COVID update: Jones Beach vaccine mega-site opens as COVID group of variants confirmed on Long Island

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) – New York State opens its third mass vaccination site in our area on Thursday morning – the fourth nationally – at Jones Beach State Park on Long Island.

The mega-site, which is also the state’s first site, opens at 8 p.m.

Also, starting today in New York, the vaccines will be available at Fort Washington Avenue Armory in Washington Heights.

Photos from all sites in New York are available for appointment for the 7 million New Yorkers in groups 1a and 1b, which includes people aged 65 and over.

Governor Andrew Cuomo estimates that it will take more than 5 months to vaccinate everyone in these groups.

Both openings come as New York sees more cases of the more contagious variant COVID-19 that was first reported in the United Kingdom.

There are now at least 15 state-confirmed cases located in two separate clusters.

The latest group was identified on Wednesday, with two cases each in Suffolk and Nassau counties. A fifth case in Queens has also been linked.

This cluster is unrelated to the previous case group in Saratoga Springs confirmed last week.

With this in mind, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has called for flight restrictions to prevent more cases of that contagious strain from arriving in the UK and elsewhere.

The Jones Beach mega-site opens Thursday morning with a press conference, but the Nassau County executive was not expected to attend.

Laura Curran is in quarantine at home after a possible exposure to COVID-19. Looks good.

To date, just over 700,000 people have received the vaccine at the state level.
