CHICAGO (WLS) – Illinois health officials reported 2,825 new cases of COVID-19 and 53 deaths Wednesday, while Gov. JB Pritzker announced an extension of Phase 1B eligibility in Illinois. .

The total number of cases in Illinois now stands at 1,152,995, with a total of 19,739 deaths since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Governor Pritzker announced Wednesday that Illinois plans to extend Phase 1B eligibility on Feb. 25 to people with comorbidities and underlying conditions as defined by the CDC. In addition, Illinois will give priority to people with disabilities.

“As soon as we receive a sufficient amount of vaccines, we must not waste time protecting a larger section of our most vulnerable population,” Pritzker said. “People under the age of 65 who live with comorbidities, such as cancer survivors or those suffering from heart disease, have an increased risk of serious complications or death if they contract COVID-19. expand the eligible population as the supply allows, bringing us closer to the point where the vaccine is widely available to anyone who wants it. The governor said his office is working with local health departments on the expansion and areas that have already vaccinated most eligible Phase 1B residents can extend access before February 25th.
