COVID NYC Update: The city has less than 1,000 first doses of COVID-19 vaccine as 2 new sites open for appointments

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) – New York City had less than 1,000 first doses of COVID-19 vaccine available Saturday, according to data on the city’s website.

The city supplies its state.

The state says their deliveries were delayed this week due to winter storms that hit much of the country.

Governor Cuomo said Friday, “Every dose that should have been delivered on Monday was withheld and only a limited number of Pfizer vaccines left the transportation facilities on Tuesday and Wednesday.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio said he wanted to remove Cuomo from the trial and deliver the vaccine directly to the city.

The city has not stopped administering vaccines because it has more than 110,000 secondary doses, which de Blasio would like to use as first doses, but state and federal officials have been resilient.

Meanwhile, people can begin scheduling two new mass vaccination sites that open Wednesday in Brooklyn and Queens.

Appointments opened at 8 a.m. Saturday.

The Medgar Evers College sites in Crown Heights and York College in Jamaica will be run by New York State and FEMA.

In the first week, they will take appointments only from people living in certain zip codes severely affected by the pandemic.

On Friday, de Blasio attended the opening of a new vaccination site at Empire Outlets on Staten Island.

His wife, New York’s first lady, Chirlane McCray, visited a vaccination center at Canarsie High School on Friday, where she thanked workers for coming out of the storm.
