Here is today’s COVID-19 update from the County Agency for Health and Human Services, with data until January 18.

ICU capacity and order of stay at home:

  • The current availability of the intensive care unit (ICU) bed for the Southern California region is 0.0% and will be updated daily by the state.
  • Regional home stay order it is in force and prohibits meetings of any size with people from other households and adds restrictions for several sectors.
  • The order will last until the ICU availability of the region meets or exceeds 15%.

Community outbreaks:

  • Seven new outbreaks were confirmed on January 18: three in the TK-12 school environment, two in the business environment, one in a government setting and one in a hotel / resort / spa.
  • No new community outbreaks were confirmed on January 17.
  • Twelve community outbreaks were confirmed on 16 January: five in childcare / preschool / childcare sets, two in business settings, two in government settings, one in an emergency services setting, one in a medical framework and one in a retail setting.
  • Seven outbreaks were confirmed on 15 January: three in business settings, two in emergency services settings, one in a residence and one in a restaurant.
  • In the last seven days (January 12 to January 18), 47 community outbreaks have been confirmed.
  • The number of Community outbreaks remains above the trigger of seven or more in seven days.
  • A community outbreak is defined as three or more cases of COVID-19 in a setting and in people from different households in the last 14 days.

Testing:

  • 12,675 tests were reported to the county on January 18, and the percentage of new positive cases was 20%.
  • The average continuous percentage of 14 positive cases is 12.1%. The target is less than 8.0%.
  • The daily average of 7 days of tests is 24,333.
  • People at higher risk of COVID-19 who are with or without symptoms should be tested. People with any symptoms should be tested. Nurses and essential workers should also receive a test, as well as people who have had close contact with a positive case or who live in communities that are severely affected. Those who have recently returned from travel or who have attended holiday meetings are also urged to be tested.

Cases:

  • 2,498 cases were reported to the county on January 18. The total for the region is now 216,835.
  • 8,484 or 3.9% of all cases required hospitalization.
  • 1,314 or 0.6% of all cases and 15.5% of hospitalized cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.

Deaths:

  • Six new COVID-19 deaths were reported to the county on January 18th. The total for the region is now 2,109.
  • Three women and three men died between December 28 and January 9.
  • Of the six new deaths reported, five people who died were 80 years of age or older and one person was 70 years old.
  • They all had underlying medical conditions.
  • On January 17, no counties were reported dead by COVID-19.
  • On January 16, 38 new deaths were reported through COVID-19.
  • 13 women and 25 men died between December 29 and January 15.
  • Of the 38 new deaths reported, 14 people who died were 80 years of age or older, 13 people were 70 years old, five people were 60 years old and six people were 50 years old.
  • 34 had basic medical conditions and four had a pending medical history.
  • 28 new COVID-19 deaths were reported to the county on January 15.
  • 14 women and 14 men died between January 1 and January 14.
  • Of the 28 new deaths reported, 12 people who died were 80 years old or older, seven were 70 years old, six were 60 years old and three were 50 years old.
  • 27 had underlying medical conditions and one had a pending medical history.
