COVID-19 Statistics | April 21, 2021 | The Lost Coast Outpost

Twenty-eight new cases of COVID-19 were reported today in Humboldt County, bringing the total number of county residents who tested positive for the virus to 3,659. This is the highest number of cases in a single day since February 11.

Local vaccine uptake has dropped significantly since April 9, when Humboldt County opened eligibility for residents over the age of 16, leaving thousands of vacancies at clinics this week. This slow rate of absorption has led health officials to offer walking meetings from today to Sunday and to urge those who have not yet been vaccinated to take this first step.

Walk-ins are available on a first-come, first-served basis, although booking an appointment is the best way to make sure a vaccine is available when you want it and avoid wasting the vaccine. Clinics are held at the Arcata Community Center, located at 321 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Pkwy., With access hours from 6 to 7 p.m. and today through Sunday. These availabilities are for those who want the first or second dose. Spanish and English speakers are available at each clinic.

Schedules for this week’s Moderna and Pfizer clinics can be made at MyTurn.ca.gov. The state portal has been updated to allow those in more remote areas of the county to view clinics in turn, as the search range has been increased to 200 miles.

All residents of the county aged 16 and over can register, although 16 and 17 year olds can only register for the Pfizer vaccine. Minors must have proof of age and be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The following clinics and vaccines are available by appointment and for walk-ins. Visit MyTurn.ca.gov for specific dates and times.

  • Today – Modern (18 years and over)
  • Thursday – Pfizer (16 years and over)
  • Friday – Modern (18 years and over)
  • Saturday – Pfizer (16 years and over)
  • Sunday – Modern and Pfizer (16 years and over)

Lindsey Mendez, a family nurse and member of the COVID-19 vaccine working group, said: “With supply exceeding demand for the first time since the vaccine was launched, we urge people to schedule an appointment now.”

Almost half of the eligible residents received at least one dose

  • 84,833 doses of vaccine were administered in the county.
  • About 80% of the county’s residents over the age of 75 have received at least one dose and are partially protected. 67% of the county residents over the age of 75 are completely vaccinated.
