New Covid-19 cases reported in the US decreased from a day earlier, but deaths increased as the national average number of new cases per day evolved downwards.
The country reported more than 54,000 new cases for Tuesday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University and released early Wednesday morning. This figure can be updated later in the morning. Tuesday’s figure fell from 67,933 a day earlier and 77,878 a week earlier.
The seven-day average of newly reported cases was 67,122 as of Monday, and the 14-day average was 67,940, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Johns Hopkins data.
When the seven-day average is lower than the 14-day average, it indicates that the cases are decreasing. Monday was the third consecutive day when it was like this, after 10 consecutive days in which the average of seven days was higher than the average of 14 days.
There were 767 Covid-19-related deaths in the United States on Tuesday, according to Johns Hopkins, up from 477 a day earlier, but down from 824 a week earlier. The average number of seven days of deaths per day was 714 from Monday, and the average of 14 days was 840.
An average of three million doses of the vaccine have been given every day in the past week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In total, 213.4 million doses were administered, out of 272 million distributed doses. About a third of American adults have been completely vaccinated and more than half have received at least one dose, the CDC said.
North Dakota has been offering free vaccinations against Covid-19 to Canadian trucks traveling from Manitoba province since Wednesday, the first coordinated cross-border vaccination program between the United States and its northern neighbor.
Canada is struggling to implement its inoculation program, while the US continues to expand access to its citizens.
Some of the effects of the pandemic have begun to reverse. Many students are beginning to recover from academic failures caused by the pandemic, according to a report released Tuesday on new test data. But this year’s rising carbon emissions are about to reverse much of last year’s sharp decline.
In total, nearly 31.8 million cases of Covid-19 were reported in the United States and more than 568,000 people died. Worldwide, more than 142.9 million cases have been reported and more than 3.04 million people have died.
