COVID-19 hospitalizations are showing a slight increase

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The number of people hospitalized for the new coronavirus has risen somewhat, according to state data, as tests continued to lag behind more common rates due to the New Year holiday.

On Sunday, at 10:30 a.m., the Iowa Department of Public Health said 1,121 people who tested positive for COVID-19 were added to the state total from the same hour on Saturday, which now stands at 284,265. In total, 244,022 people are considered to have recovered from the disease, which represents an increase of 804 people.

No additional people who died due to COVID-19 were added to the state total. 3,946 people have died from the virus since the pandemic began.

577 people were hospitalized in Iowa due to the disease, a net increase of five people. 120 of these people are in intensive care units, a net increase of one. 52 of these patients require the use of a ventilator, a net decrease of eight. 66 people were recently admitted to Iowa hospitals in the 24-hour reporting period, which was the lowest total number of new admissions since Oct. 19.

Another 2,634 people had test results reported by public and private laboratories in the last 24 hours, which reflects the continuation of the low number of tests, probably due to the holiday period. The positivity rate for this batch of tests was 42.6%, higher than the 34.5% of the previous day. The positivity rate calculated using this method may differ from the number on the state coronavirus dashboard due to the fact that it uses the number of people tested, not the total number of tests, including people who have been tested repeatedly.

A total of 1,364,344 people in Iowa have been tested since the beginning of the pandemic.
