Covid-19: 116 new cases, 871 active cases – Prime Minister says people ignore advice – The Royal Gazette

Updated: April 11, 2021 8:35 AM

The island set a new daily record for positive coronavirus cases, with 116 cases discovered from 1,634 tests.

The last result produces a positivity rate of 7.1% for the virus.

The increase means that there were 370 new cases in just five days, and now there are 871 people with coronavirus on the island, which is 49.1% of all cases since the pandemic began in March last year.

Twenty-eight people are in hospital for the disease, two more than the last update and there are six more people in intensive care.

There are 20 new cases classified as local broadcasts with known contacts and 91 cases under investigation – to residents with no known links to other sources and no recent travel history.

Five of the new cases come from abroad, with two residents arriving from Atlanta last Saturday testing positive on the fourth day.

Three residents who returned from Boston, New York and London on March 30 were found infected on tests on the 8th day.

There have been 24 recoveries since the last update.

The latest update brings the island’s active cases to 871, with 843 under public health monitoring.

Kim Wilson, the health minister, warned that “voice notes and messages that cause alarm for people” were circulating in the community.

She added: “I will say again, if you have any questions about taking Covid-19, talk to your doctor.

“Access reliable sources of information, coronavirus.gov.bm, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization or Public Health England are some of the sites that provide current and accurate information.

“We need to work together to stop the spread of the coronavirus and to protect our most vulnerable citizens.”

Mrs. Wilson called anyone who felt unwell to stay home, see their doctor, and get an appointment for a test.

With the island in phase 3 of its vaccination program, she urged anyone who was not registered to sign up for the jab – and wear a proper mask when attending the vaccination center.

In a series of tweets, Prime Minister David Burt said that “the number of new cases is alarming and has been caused by:

1) Continuous mixing of households contrary to advice.

2) High prevalence in the workplace (b4 remote work) in which people did not wear masks that spread infections (the cause of today’s large number of tests on Wednesday).

This Sunday, the Covid-19 Call Center phone lines close early at 15:00 for an upgrade.

Anyone with questions should email [email protected].

Telephone lines return to normal at 09:00 on Monday.
