Coronavirus vaccine: Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner offers COVID-19 vaccination update at Minute Maid Park

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Minute Maid Park, Houston’s newest COVID-19 vaccination site, delivered 5,000 vaccinations Saturday morning, according to health officials.

Mayor Sylvester Turner visited the site because the vaccinations were administered by the Houston Department of Health.

The Houston Department of Health sent a reminder on Twitter that Monday’s appointments were full.

Since the mega site is not run, one thing that helps operations run smoothly is the large police presence that directs people to where they need to park and where to go.

“It’s a big operation. There are my problems from time to time, but I assure you that vaccinations are not on the shelves,” said Mayor Turner.

Despite efforts to vaccinate people, he said the COVID-19 positivity rate is still much higher than anyone would like.

“I still get some annoying images of people sitting in clubs that have been recategorized as restaurants,” he said. “And let me tell you, there are no restaurants.”

Turner said he would turn to TABC to counter reclassifications. He said he contacted Sam Pena, head of the Houston fire department. He and his department are expected to review some of these restaurants on Saturday night.

“When you look at these pictures, there’s no food on the table,” Turner said. “It’s crazy. I’m asking the state to review their policies.”

He said looping holes like these make it very difficult for the city to get rid of the virus.

“TABC continues to conduct more than 1,000 inspections each week, which includes responding to reports of potential violations,” TABC later said in a statement. “We are aware of the videos that came out this weekend and we have already opened our own investigation.”

The Minute Maid Park Center is one of three mega sites operating in the Houston area.

Memorial Herman is to administer 13,000 vaccinations Thursday through Sunday at the NRG, which amounts to about 3,200 a day. The 2,000 additional slots the hospital added for the NRG drive-thru clinic this weekend are now full.

The spots were added to the program for January 16 and 17, according to a statement from the hospital. After about an hour, the hospital announced that they had all been taken.

Houston Methodist Hospital will take 4,000 photos. During this event, Hermann Memorial intends to vaccinate people aged 65 and over, which is based on the guidelines of phase 1B vaccination distribution.

Many health departments in the surrounding counties, including Fort Bend, Montgomery, Waller, Brazoria and Galveston counties, did not receive additional doses last week.

Many of these leaders have expressed frustration and want to be able to do for their residents what Houston is doing today.

The state health department said it expects to receive at least 100,000 more doses this week than last year, which they said will allow them to reach more counties.
